FAQ

What is a bike fit?

A bike fit can be the key to truly enjoying the sport of cycling. It is the process of finding the best possible position for the rider's body to be in while riding. A well fit bike will be both comfortable and efficent for the rider. Our fitters utilize decades of experience, combined with modern fit technolgy including the GURU Dynamic Fit Unit (DFU), to ensure the best result possible.

How often should I have a re-fit?

It is common to hear fitters say "every two years" as a standard answer. However, there are many factors that can cause a new fitting (or a fit check) to be advantageous. Weight loss or gain, injury (cycling or otherwise), strength increase or decrease, changes in riding style/type and changes in flexibility are all normal occurences that can have a major impact on the rider's comfort and efficiency. If the rider is having discomfort on his/her current setup, or have experienced physiological changes since that individual's last fitting, it is likely a good time to get a fit.

What does a fitting include?

The bike fitting charge includes the specific services described in the outline of our fit offerings. Additional work to adjust an existing bike to the resulting position can result in additional labor charges as it is a separate job often being performed by a different employee. If you do not see the exact service you are looking for, we are happy to offer our fit services a la carte or as needed at a fit lab rate of $90 per half hour. Any position generated during a fit at Apex Velo is owned by the customer being fitted. The customer receives all of the final fit coodinates, component selections and specific numbers resulting from the fit.

Does my bike get adjusted to the new fit numbers after the fitting?

The short answer is yes. With all of our fits, we include the service of adjusting saddle position and simple cockpit adjustments such as a stem change. If additional, more complex, work such as handlebar or crankset swaps or recabling are needed, this is the responsibility of the customer and is billed at our service department's normal labor rates. With any new bike purchased at and fit by Apex Velo, we include the complete conversion to the customer's fit numbers. Please bear in mind that this service is limited to the labor costs of adjusting the bike and replacing components as needed. The cost of any components needed to achieve the fit numbers are the reponsibility of the customer.

What if I want a bike you do not carry. Can you still fit me?

Yes. We are happy to fit any bike that someone may own or hope to purchase. We also are happy to assist riders in their purchase of a bike we do not stock for a consulting fee.

Do I really need a bike fit?

We strongly feel that a having a bike perfectly fit is the most important variable in a rider's enjoyment of cycling. The rider is able to ride farther, faster and more comfortably on a well fit bike than on a bike that is poorly fit to that individual. The combination of a great fit and cutting edge technology is an unforgettable experience.

Are any other costs usually associated with a fit?

It is very common that in order for a bike to be adjusted to the final fit position, new or different parts are required. Most frequently, this involves a stem and saddle. Depending on an individual's needs, saddle, stem, handlebars, seatpost, crankset, shoes and pedals all can play a vital role in perfecting a bike fit and may ideally be replaced. In these cases, we strive to identify what we propose to change and why. Whenever possible, we give the rider being fit an opportunity to try the resulting position before comitting to major parts replacement. If a rider chooses not to change certain parts, we work to maximize the potential of the rider's fit using the existing components.

Why should I get a fitting before buying a new (or used) bike?

We highly recomend this approach. Once we have completed a fitting, we can use the numbers generated to guide us in finding a bike that matches the customer's fit needs. This ensures that bike size, geometry, even parts/accessories, are optimized out of the box and can save money in the long run. A well fit bike will be more comfortable, faster and more fun to ride than even a more expensive bike that does not have the proper fit.

Do women need a women's specific bike?

Again, another maybe answer to this question. Typically, women specific bikes have a slightly shorter reach and taller stack height than similarly sized unisex bikes. This is due to this geometry being helpful for the fit needs of many female riders. However, all of us are proportioned differently and there is no guarantee what bike or frame geometry is ideal based on gender alone. A fitting prior to a bike purchase answers this question and helps guide the correct choice.
